Paramount Skydance Issues Cease-and-Desist to ByteDance Over AI Copyright Dispute
Paramount Skydance has escalated its legal battle with ByteDance, accusing the Chinese tech giant of blatant intellectual property infringement through its Seedance and Seedream AI platforms. The dispute centers on AI-generated content featuring Paramount-owned franchises like Dora the Explorer, South Park, and Star Trek without authorization.
In a sharply worded cease-and-desist letter, Paramount's IP chief Gabriel Miller demanded ByteDance immediately halt what he called unlawful use of copyrighted characters and trademarked assets. The legal notice underscores growing tensions between Hollywood studios and AI developers over generative content.
ByteDance had recently launched Seedance 2.0 through its Jianying app in China, with plans for global expansion via CapCut. The timing of Paramount's legal action suggests preemptive measures against potential widespread dissemination of AI-generated content using its IP.
